Description

Overview

This provocative exhibition, “A Contest of Allure,” brings together the works of two legendary ukiyo-e masters, Katsushika Hokusai and Keisai Eisen, within the vibrant atmosphere of modern Kabukicho. As the third installment of the Shinjuku Kabukicho Shunga Exhibition WA, it explores the bold, unrestrained curiosity of Hokusai alongside the decadent, atmospheric sensuality that defined Eisen’s unique style.

Featuring approximately 100 works from the renowned Uragami collection, the showcase provides a rare look at Edo-period shunga (erotic art) and its celebration of human desire and tenderness. A highlight of the event is the limited-time display of Hokusai’s famous masterpiece, “The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife,” offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness one of the most iconic images in Japanese art history.

Faqs

What are the age requirements for this exhibition?

Due to the explicit nature of the shunga artwork on display, admission is strictly restricted to visitors aged 18 and over. All guests may be required to present a valid form of identification, such as a passport or driver’s license, for age verification at the entrance.

How much time should I allow for the visit?

Most visitors spend approximately 60 to 90 minutes exploring the collection of 100 works. The exhibition is spread across two locations, the main Noh Stage and the BOND second venue, which are within a short walking distance of each other.

Are there extended hours for evening visits?

The exhibition typically operates from 11:00 to 19:00, but it offers extended evening hours every Friday and Saturday until 21:00. This allows visitors to experience the art in a setting that reflects the nightlife culture of the surrounding Kabukicho district.

Is re-entry permitted on the day of my visit?

Re-entry to the exhibition venues is permitted only on the same day as your initial entry. Please ensure you keep your ticket stub or digital confirmation handy to show the staff at the reception desk when returning.

Who curated the works featured in this contest of allure?

The exhibition features pieces selected from the private collection of Mitsuru Uragami, a leading authority on ukiyo-e and director of Uragami Sokyudo. The curation focuses on the stylistic dialogue between Hokusai’s technical freedom and Eisen’s seductive atmosphere.
